As it stands now, RDNA 1 and 2 users need to either run windows, or unsupported drivers in order to develop against AMF.

The current package, 25.20, works fine without changes alongside RADV. As it stands now, the only issue I have encountered with it is on an RDNA 3 system, throwing an unsupported AV1 error. Ideally, the later packages would ship 25.20 for RDNA 1 and 2 users, and newer drivers for RDNA 3 and 4 users, making the install process easier.

Making AMF a more unified API across Windows and Linux would increase the APIs usability, and ideally adoption rate. This would also means that developers no longer have to rely on VA-API or Vulkan for encoding on AMD and Linux.

Noted. We need to discuss internally. Correct me if I am wrong: you are asking to repackage AMF runtime from 25.20 into a separate package, similarly to later AMF packages and test it with all-open-source Radeon driver and with drivers included into distros with RDNA1 & 2 as target. If so, it would be one-time thing. What distros does make sense to support?

That's what I'm doing currently, yes. My current target is REHL 9 or 10 if I recall, and that package works on cachyos, arch, and fedora 44. One for REHL, one for Ubuntu, and if possible one just compiled against the latest kernel and mesa would be wonderful.

I don't think we need to recompile, just prepare a package. Do you have issues running current binaries against the latest kernel? It could be an issue with VCN FW mismatch, but it cannot be solved by recompiling. Though, I hope older FW was not updated.

I haven't had any issues outside of using said blob on RDNA 3 and 4, which was it throwing an AV1 unsupported error. This would be an issue unless 25.20 and later could be installed together per GPU, or 25.20 was bundled with later for use in say, a Zen 4 system with an RDNA 3 or 4 dgpu.

It would be not feasible to support older and newer GPUs in the same driver. We may be able to provide a package for older GPUs separate from Radeon like we do for RDNA3+ and which will work with latest all-open-source or distro driver.

If it's not feasible to do so and get things like smart access memory on those systems that's fine, even having a package I could switch between for the same of development would be helpful.
