To reproduce - after gaining control, repeatedly press X to open the game's menu and A to close it. It'll usually happen within 2-3 minutes of trying this.
To fix - Load an in-game save from the memory card, restart the game, or enter battle.
Symptoms: Although the game continues to run, the screen is black during gameplay. The menu can still be accessed, but it'll just return to a black screen when closed. Entering another room or exiting/entering the overworld will bring back the background, but the player's character will be invisible. Making and loading a savestate after this happens will not fix the problem, unless the savestate was made before the glitch happened.
