How Is the Number of Active AnduinOS Users Determined? #432

The AnduinOS homepage states that the operating system has more than 2,000 users. Is there a daily ping or telemetry mechanism, similar to Firefox, or how exactly is the number of active users determined? 
This may seem a little nitpicky, but in Germany we have very, very strict standards when it comes to data protection. Users must be informed transparently about how their data is being used, and there must generally be a way to have their data deleted. From a legal standpoint, you cannot use Microsoft Office 365 in public authorities in Germany without breaking the law. Although data processing agreements are in place, nobody trusts them. In case you're wondering why that's the case here. Germany has some of the strictest data protection regulations in the world, largely shaped by our historical experience between 1933 and 1945. In this regard, I would recommend taking a look at the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), particularly the various articles concerning how personal data must be handled. One important principle, for example, is data minimization: only the data that is absolutely necessary may be collected and the user must know about it. This is also why, in Germany, you will encounter a cookie banner on almost every website you visit that uses cookies requiring consent. No joke. Perhaps you should check whether your website ‘needs’ one. The penalties for violating data protection regulations can be extremely high, as they can be based on a company's annual worldwide turnover. Ask Facebook! They had to pay €1.2 billion. In Germany, there are law firms that do nothing all day but send out notices regarding data protection violations or copyright infringements. It's a real business. This may also be one reason why Firefox remains particularly popular in Germany: we Germans tend to be very, very privacy-conscious. So I would be interested to know how the "2,000+ users" figure is calculated and whether any telemetry or other data collection is involved. Don't worry, I'm not going to sue you. 😄 |
